Americans Wake Up to Their Soft Addictions as Judith Appears on Good Morning America

About five million viewers* likely watched on Tuesday, July 22 when Judith Wright appeared on ABC's early morning news show. As part of the "Healthy Woman" segment, Diane Sawyer talked with Judith about soft addictions and their impact on all of us. Three women who have completed the soft addictions training - Christina, Ela and Holly - accompanied Judith to New York to be part of the segment and talk about their own personal challenges. Ela talked about compulsively buying shoes when she feels upset, Holly described how she keeps changing her hair color to make herself feel more beautiful, and Christina explained about watching the same few movies over and over again to manage feelings of loneliness. The concept that we can all have more life, love and meaning by challenging these self-limiting habits came across powerfully. "We need more time for this," said Diane at the end of the interview. Yes, we do!

After the program, calls and emails began pouring in from different parts of the country. Here are just a few of the uplifting and heart-warming messages we received.

An Answer to a Prayer

One woman from Los Angeles said that seeing the soft addictions segment on Good Morning America was like "the answer to a prayer" - and she had the definite sense that destiny was guiding her to watch the show.

Here's why: On July 22, she was having an unusual morning. She was helping her boyfriend take his boss to the hospital. They had gone to his boss's house to help him get ready, and, while waiting, she suddenly had the urge to turn on TV. She thought the urge was strange, since she was in another person's home on an errand of mercy. Still, she turned on the set and immediately found herself watching Judith on Good Morning America. The message about soft addictions hit her so powerfully, she said, that she knew "this cannot be a coincidence." Later that morning, she picked up the telephone and called the Wright Institute to find out more. Now she is looking forward to reading the book and going on the Soft Addictions Training Intensive weekend. She says:

"This is an answer to my prayers. It's just what I needed."

From a young woman who stopped Judith, Christina, Ela and Holly on the streets of New York just after the show:

"You women are very brave. It was important. Women need to hear what you were saying..."

Shortly after the program aired, Christina received this message from a client:

"I saw you this morning. How exciting! You did a super job - you didn't even look nervous and you expressed yourself very well! You actually sat down and talked with Diane Sawyer! Wow."Of course now I'm left to deal with the thought-provoking aspects of the show... e.g. does my fanatic interest in several sports teams border on a soft addiction? I'll be thinking about that one as we approach the football and basketball seasons."

And another viewer said:

"I ordered several copies of the book for friends, and everybody has loved it..."*
